How David Lynch Changed TV.

Every now and again something really special comes along on television. A prime example of this is when ‘Twin Peaks’ was first shown. Suddenly, everyone you talked to seemed to be keen on discussing the fate of Laura Palmer. How did she die? Who killed her? And just what in the name of God is going on in the small town of Twin Peaks???

This Twin Peaks forum about the show brings back lots of memories; the brilliant theme music by Julee Cruise and Angelo Badalamenti, the weird characters in the show and the total strangeness of it all. To be honest, I don’t think there has been anything quite like it since. A few programmes have tried to do something in the same style but it just hasn’t been the same.

David Lynch has done many good films. The best, for me, were probably ‘The Elephant Man’, ‘Blue Velvet’ and ‘Wild at Heart’. But when he came up with the idea for Twin Peaks, he really did manage to tap into something very special. You would sit and watch it some weeks and it would all be incredibly normal, and then the next part would be like a bad acid trip. There were some really bizarre and downright disturbing elements in the show that could come back and haunt you when you were wrapped up in bed. I remember the tall and mysterious Russian, the log lady, the little man from another place and the truly bloody scary killer Bob.

Twin Peaks really did succeed in breaking the mould as far as TV shows go. It influenced, perplexed, frightened and amused a very large television audience. For anyone, like myself, who can remember sitting down and watching it every week, a forum like this one is a really interesting to have a look at.

And remember; ‘The owls are not what they seem.’
